For our Urban Walk & Talks this fall we are excited to explore the forests of San Francisco. We will be adventuring to Sutro Forest, the Oak Woodlands of Golden Gate Park, the always inspiring Tenderloin National Forest, and we will end with a guided hike through iconic street trees of the city with our friend from the Environment Department.

We are also excited to host guided tours in collaboration with the American Conservatory Theater's production of North by Northwest, and a separate set of walks inspired by the SF Public Library's One City One Book selection this fall.

Oak Woodlands of Golden Gate Park

An Urban Walk & Talk

Tom Radulovich of Livable City, and a long-time Oak Woodland volunteer gardener, will lead a lively tour of this corner of Golden Gate Park, home to some of the oldest trees in the area, and a thriving woodland full of all kinds of native species.

Joining friends from the Tenderloin Museum and other TL regulars, we will explore the remarkable mini-forest known as the Tenderloin National Forest in Cohen Alley that has been growing for more than two decades. We will also discover other urban green spaces in the area.

Take a deep dive into the themes underlying the journey North by Northwest's main character embarks on. Visit a San Francisco once gripped by Cold War paranoia and espionage. Explore the machinations of global powers during the founding of the United Nations and traverse the spaces where organizations and individuals were persecuted during McCarthyism’s darkest hours. We also take you through locations near Union Square seen through the eyes of Alfred Hitchcock’s camera lens. This 90 minute walking tour, conducted by Shaping San Francisco historians LisaRuth Elliott and Chris Carlsson, will whet your appetite for ACT’s new production of the classic North by Northwest.

Route notes: Tour includes a moderate uphill walk and slightly steeper short downhill portion.

Shaping San Francisco leads a walking tour of various sites in Downtown and SOMA that evoke scenes, feelings, and histories so well wrought in Awake in the Floating City by Susanna Kwan, chosen by the San Francisco Public Library's One City One Book program. From high rises to an amble through Chinatown to rooftop outlooks to various memorials to a variety of elevated sites, this tour is sure to transport your imagination and sense of the city backwards and forwards in time.
