ANOTHER WAY: At the Edge

SF Bay Rim Utopian Thought Experiments

And special offsite events at various locations (see below)

For our Urban Walk & Talks (and bike rides!) this season we are inspired by a series of haptic images created by Stephen Vincent. You are invited to join us in utopian thought experiments along the rim of the San Francisco Bay. These immersive walks and bicycle rides intend to focus on the visceral richness found in the interstices. Together we explore the sights, sounds, smells, and stories of life at the edge, imagining other collective futures for ourselves as we go. Bring notebooks for sketching, writing thoughts, poetry, etc. or perhaps record sounds and make photos or videos to share with each other.

Another Way Urban Bike & Talk: Pier to Pier

An Urban Bike & Talk

Starting at the north end of San Francisco's bay waterfront, we'll weave along the public shore by bicycle moving from pier to pier. Our ambitious goal will not be to achieve a particular destination, rather explore the sights, sounds, smells, and stories of life at the edge. On this immersive bike ride we provide some historical context for our present views over the seawall and from the far end of these historic structures, and engage in individual and collective thought experiments about an utopian future.

Bring notebooks for sketching, writing thoughts, poetry, songs, etc. or perhaps record sounds and make photos or videos to share with each other.

Special Event

Explore Ocean Beach in a treasure hunt and photo-taking exercise. We welcome you to join us in an exploration of the human and environmental changes along the Pacific seashore. Historic “Then” images will be posted from Sloat Boulevard to the Land’s End; you are encouraged to find them and match them with “Now” views of the City and present ecology. The best contemporary photos submitted from the day’s journey will be added to Shaping San Francisco’s digital archive, FoundSF.org. Participants will receive a keepsake specially designed for the event.

Knowledgeable local guides on various topics will be on hand at designated sites to address your curiosities and offer a deeper dive into life at the edge of the continent. With Ocean Beach Institute, Western Neighborhoods Project, and Problem Library

Another Way Urban Walk & Talk: Candlestick Pt State Recreation Area

Urban Walk & Talk

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area is a natural park on the bayshore, built on landfill, created by community input and control. We spend the afternoon at this outpost where land and bay and sky all connect. Explore the sights, sounds, smells, and stories of life at the edge and ruminate on the rising seas, and whatever other whimsical insights you may have. On this immersive wander we give historical context of the urban state park's creation and the habitat it provides, and engage in individual and collective thought experiments about an utopian future. Bring something to share and we’ll end with a picnic at one of the many gorgeous spots on this underexplored state park in the bay! Bring notebooks for sketching, writing thoughts, poetry, songs, etc. or perhaps record sounds and make photos or videos to share with each other.

Another Way Urban Bike & Talk: East Bayshore—Richmond to Treasure Island

Urban Bike & Talk

Join us by bicycle as we leave the peninsula and ride from Richmond to Treasure Island. Visit the Rosie the Riveter National Monument before proceeding with us along the eastern shore of the Bay, with a stop at the Albany Bulb and other locations. Following estuaries and pedaling over the east span of the Bay Bridge, we explore the sights, sounds, smells, and stories of life at the edge and ruminate on the rising seas. On this immersive bike ride we give historical context for the contemporary landscape of the east bayshore, and engage in individual and collective thought experiments about an utopian future. Bring notebooks for sketching, writing thoughts, poetry, songs, etc. or perhaps record sounds and make photos or videos to share with each other.

Each attendee pays their own ferry passage to Richmond and from Treasure Island (or MUNI fare from TI.)
